Christmas donation 2014 for Ebola orphans

According to the latest UNICEF estimates, at least 3,700 children in West Africa have been left orphaned by the Ebola epidemic. The homeless Ebola orphans are severely traumatised and have to struggle to survive on the streets. For this reason, managing director Christiane Riefler-Karpa has put the traditional €40,000 Memmert Christmas donation at the disposal of SOS Children's Villages in Guinea.

Many children are outcasts in their home countries

Ebola has destroyed the lives of thousands of people and the end of the epidemic is not in sight. The traditionally strong family ties in West Africa are also breaking apart as people are so afraid of getting infected, that relatives refuse to take Ebola orphans into their homes or to at least give them the bare necessities to survive. Even infants have to struggle to survive on the streets. Relief organisations such as the SOS Children's Villages try to combat the epidemic, but they are running against the clock.

Help for Ebola orphans in Guinea

Even before the Ebola outbreak, the child mortality rate in Guinea was high. Very often, small children don't survive infections such as polio, measles, malaria or yellow fever due to insufficient medical care and chronic undernourishment. In Conakry, the largest West African city affected by Ebola, SOS Children's Villages are desperately struggling to save the lives of their fosterlings and that of the orphaned children. They receive medical and psychological care in transitional camps, but there is a lack of medication, food, sanitary products and disinfectants.
