Triathlon is back on - Memmert Rothsee Triathlon 2021

After more than two years, finally, there was a competitive atmosphere at the Rothsee. Until almost two weeks before the event, there was still uncertainty. The Memmert Rothsee Triathlon events had to be completely reorganized this year with hygiene measures and a reduced number of participants. After the approval by the city of Roth, at the beginning of July, the organizers, participants, and Memmert as the main sponsor of the classic race were able to breathe a sigh of relief and begin final preparations.

On Saturday, July 17th, 2021, the triathlon for kids and youth, popular triathletes, and Bundesliga athletes took place as usual. On Sunday, July 18th, 2021, the 663 individual starters and 54 relays were allowed to start on the Olympic distance. Nine individual starters and two relays competed for the Memmert team this year.

The swimming component of the  32th Memmert Rothsee Triathlon took place with participants heading out in five-second intervals in groups of five. Thomas Ott finished the 1.5-kilometer route first. Unfortunately, Ott was unable to keep his lead on the bike route and came in second in the transition area after Sebastian Neef. Lena Gottwald was the first female athlete to complete the 42-kilometer bike course. After switching to running shoes, the participants started the 10-kilometer final triathlon sprint over the dam on the Großer Rothsee. The sunny day saw some spectators, with cowbells and posters, cheer the athletes towards the last stretch

After a total of 1 hour, 56 minutes, and 43 seconds, Sebastian Neef reached the finish line with a lead of about one minute. Lena Gottwald crossed the finish line, after 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 01 second, and took home the victory of the female starters. We congratulate the first two winners and are proud of the athletes in Team Memmert. All 18 participants finished the competition with flying colors.

Unfortunately, the finish line, this year, had to take place without any spectators and there could not be an award ceremony due to pandemic restrictions. However, the event was captured on Instagram for all virtual spectators to accompany the participants. The photos and videos can be viewed in the  story highlight. Of course, we missed the visitors, the supporting program, and the exhibitors. But we are very happy, thanks to the excellent organization, the Triathlon was finally able to take place again this year. Next year, we look forward to having live crowds back at the Rothsee triathlon.
