Into Space with Memmert: Supporting Student Innovation in Aerospace

How AcubeSAT from Aristotle University Thessaloniki prepares for orbit with Memmert precision.

When you think of space research, NASA or the ISS often come to mind. But in Greece, a group of passionate students from Aristotle University Thessaloniki and the SpaceDot initiative are proving that Europe can push boundaries, too. Their project AcubeSAT—part of the European Space Agency’s "Fly Your Satellite!" programme—is building a nanosatellite to explore how biology and technology perform in space.

The Mission

AcubeSAT is more than just a student project. With more than 90,000 students at Aristotle University, the team wants to promote space research in Greece and across Europe. Their nanosatellite will be launched into orbit to study how living systems adapt to the challenges of space. One focus: the behaviour of baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), a model organism that could play a key role in future space missions by supporting food production, biomanufacturing, and the study of how living cells respond to space conditions.

The Preparation on Earth

Before heading into orbit, every part of the nanosatellite must be tested under conditions that are both precise and reproducible. This includes:

• Thermal testing of circuit boards and onboard computers

• Thermal characterization of radiation sensors

• Studying how temperature variations affect yeast growth, metabolism, and sample viability

For these critical steps, the project team relies on Memmert technology. Our equipment delivers the accuracy, reliability, and stability required to simulate the demanding environments of aerospace missions. This ensures that every component is tested under conditions that mirror real-life challenges in space.

Memmert in Aerospace

The collaboration highlights how Memmert enables progress in aerospace research. Our devices provide the backbone for experiments where precision is non-negotiable - whether in biotechnology, electronics, or advanced material testing. For the AcubeSAT project Memmert’s reliability gives the team confidence that their nanosatellite is ready to face the extremes of space.
In aerospace, every detail counts. That’s why teams trust Memmert: because precision on Earth means safety in space.

A Look Ahead

For the students of SpaceDot and the AcubeSAT mission, the journey has just begun. Memmert is proud to be a part of this exciting step into the future of European aerospace.
