When 250 Degrees Are Not Enough

When conventional equipment reaches its limits, a customized technical solution is required.

For particularly demanding applications in material testing, material synthesis or sample digestion, the Memmert m360 team developed a special solution that combines higher temperatures, controlled mixing and high safety requirements in a single system.

The Challenge

In many materials science applications, samples such as rock, soil, graphite or glass flakes must be treated under pressure and at elevated temperatures while being mixed at the same time. These processes take place in so-called autoclaves. However, systems available on the market are usually only designed for temperatures of up to around 250 degrees Celsius.

There are also limitations when it comes to mixing. Standard solutions often rely on simple stirring systems, which are not suitable for every application, particularly when larger sample volumes or batch processes are involved.

A solution was therefore required that could provide higher temperatures, accommodate several autoclaves at the same time and ensure consistent movement of the samples throughout the process.

The Solution

The m360 team developed a customized heating chamber specifically designed for use with autoclaves. In addition to the higher temperature range, mixing, operation and safety were also taken into account.

The key features include:

  • Temperature range of up to 300 degrees Celsius, significantly higher than many standard solutions on the market
  • Automatic nitrogen purging for inertization as well as residual oxygen control, enabling safe operation under a protective atmosphere at temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius
  • Rotating autoclave holder for consistent mixing and to prevent samples from settling
  • Continuously adjustable speed from 0 to 30 rpm via the SIEMENS control unit
  • Customer-specific speed settings
  • Safety door lock: the chamber door can only be opened once the temperature has fallen below 40 degrees Celsius
  • Emergency stop for shutting down the system in hazardous situations
  • Easy removal of the autoclaves by automatically moving the holder into a defined reference or removal position
  • Load capacity of up to 30 kilograms
  • Capacity for several autoclaves at the same time, significantly increasing throughput in batch processes

This combination enables stable, safe and efficient operation, for example in material preparation, material digestion or the synthesis of new materials.

The Result

Users benefit from:

  • Safe temperature management up to 300 degrees Celsius
  • Improved mixing of samples during pressure treatment
  • High sample throughput through parallel processing
  • Greater flexibility for demanding material processes
  • Individually adjustable speed from 0 to 30 rpm
  • Safe operation thanks to the emergency stop and safety door lock
Conclusion

For this project, a standard solution was not sufficient to meet the customer's requirements.

Working closely with the customer, the Memmert m360 team therefore developed a solution tailored to the specific process and the requirements on site.
